Gombe Chief Judge Frees 185 Inmates

The Gombe State Criminal Justice and Inquiry Committee under the state Chief Judge, Justice Halima Mohammed, has set free 185 inmates from custodial centres across the state.

Mohammed who expressed satisfaction after the visit to Billiri Correctional Centre on Friday, said her committee worked assiduously in ensuring that anybody who deserved to be freed was set free.

She lauded the support of the committee members toward the success of the exercise, adding that the decongestion was part of the exercise towards ensuring the well-being of inmates.

She said, “In Gombe correctional centre, the committee has set free 75 inmates on bail, 61 unconditionally, and 10 of the inmates were also released due to their good conduct.”

Mohammed added that in Billiri correctional centre, “six inmates were released on bail, 26 others were released unconditionally, and seven inmates were released on the grounds of their good conduct at the correctional centre.”

While calling on all the magistrates in the state to ensure justice, she urged them to critically evaluate each case before passing judgment.
