With the incessant low power supply, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially blamed the current poor power supply experienced by electricity consumers across the country on a shortage of gas.
TCN disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, highlighting the gradual decrease in available power generation into the grid due to gas constraints faced by power generating companies.
The gas shortage has directly affected the quantity of bulk power available on the grid for transmission to electricity distribution companies nationwide, as disclosed by TCN. Nigerians have been expressing dissatisfaction with the low power supply since December 2023, prompting distribution companies to clarify that they are also victims of limited allocations from generating companies.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company specifically pointed to a gas shortage as the cause of the poor power supply. In line with the challenges faced by distribution companies, TCN revealed that the load distributed to the distribution load centers has diminished, emphasizing that it can only transmit the power generated.
The TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah assured the public that TCN is actively collaborating with stakeholders in the power sector to maintain the stability of the grid despite the current challenges. She emphasized the commitment to ensuring a gradual increase in electricity supply to load centers as gas supply improves to the thermal plants.
In a plea to consumers, Mbah stated, "Please bear with us as we continue to work with the stakeholders in the value chain to ensure that supply through distribution companies to electricity consumers nationwide improves." Earlier reports indicated that various gas-fired grids in the country were not receiving sufficient gas supply, resulting in low allocations to electricity distribution companies.
