Speaking at the Eredivisie awards gala in Utrecht on Monday, he said
"I do not really want to say much about it", adding "When you see how Argentina scored their goals and how we scored our goals, and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark a..."
Fans have taken to social media to express their displeasure at Van Gaal's remarks, with many calling his claim "ridiculous."
Messi captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar,
marking his first World Cup title. The 36-year-old Ballor d'or winner scored seven goals and dished out three assists throughout the competition, playing a key role in his country's victory.
There were also violence and racial tension at the competition,
per news18.
Although, there is no proof that the competition was fixed to benefit any particular team or player.
Many people in the football world are skeptical of Van Gaal's allegation.
Van Gaal's Netherlands squad was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Argentina, and others are saying that Van Gaal is bitter because of it.
But Dutch captain Virgil Van Dijk disagreed with his ex-coach, saying:
"It is of course his opinion. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I do not share the same opinion."
There are, however, a vocal minority of supporters on social media who agree with him, justifying it by pointing to the performance of Argentina and the contentious calls made by officials.
