TikTok and Universal Music Group have signed an agreement to bring the record label's library back on the social media platform.
According to press reports from May 2, 2024, the agreement will see TikTok pay greater recompense to UMG's artists and songwriters, give them more marketing tools, and address the increasing use of AI.
Recall that UMG previously removed its library from TikTok due to conflicts about low royalties paid to its artists, non-regulation of the use of artificial intelligence, and safety concerns about mental health and bullying.
In response to UMG's charges, TikTok stated that the record label prioritized its interests over those of the musicians on its roster. The social media site also stated that it would not be pressured to pay more than it was willing to.
The agreement between UMG and TikTok will provide relief to artists served by UMG's subsidiaries, allowing them to continue taking advantage of TikTok's extensive promotional opportunities. Fans will also benefit from the ability to communicate with their favorite UMG performers.
While UMG and TikTok have addressed their problems, the same cannot be said for TikTok and the United States. The government has forced the Chinese-based business to sell off its US division or face.
