King Mohammed VI, named after his grandfather, Sultan Mohammed V, grew up in the royal palace of Rabat, exposed to the intricacies of governance and leadership from a young age. His early education took place in Morocco, followed by further studies in law at the Mohammed V University in Rabat. He also pursued postgraduate studies in political science and international relations at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

Upon the sudden death of his father, King Mohammed VI ascended to the throne on July 23, 1999, at the age of 35.
