The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing scholarships and high-quality education to people with disabilities in a variety of institutions across the country.
Mr. James Lalu, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, announced this at a stakeholders' meeting of the Voice of Disability Initiative to commemorate the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
He stated that the NCPWD is dedicated to providing scholarships and quality education to people with disabilities, as well as guaranteeing that they receive the student loans promised by President Bola Tinubu.
According to him, a lot of good will happen to people with disabilities in 2024.
Lalu said, “2024 is going to be a year of maximum benefit for persons with disabilities. A year of renewed hope and commitment, and we look forward to collaborating with VDI and other organizations for the benefit of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.”
Mrs. Catherine Edeh, Executive Director of VDI, also stated that the goal of the stakeholders' meeting was to present the organization's five-year strategic plan (2023-2027) and quarterly newsletter.
She added that it is also an opportunity to highlight the results of stakeholder engagement in Ebonyi, Kwara, and Enugu states.
Edeh, on the other hand, condemned disability prejudice and insisted that it end.
Mr Daniel Uwaezuoke, Chairman of the VDI Board of Trustees, stated that the unveiling of the VDI five-year strategic plan was timely and could not have come at a better time.
He highlighted that the government and development partners are focusing more on issues related to inclusive planning and development.
