Amazon has decided to replace plastic air pillows with recycled paper for packaging in North America, citing environmental benefits and improved functionality.
The company has already replaced 95% of plastic air pillows with paper filler and aims to eliminate plastic entirely by the end of the year. Amazon prioritizes using minimal packaging to reduce waste and focus on recyclable materials.
This initiative will remove nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually. Despite this progress, environmental groups like Oceana believe that Amazon can do more by transitioning all North America fulfillment centers away from plastic and exploring reusable packaging options.
The transition away from plastic air pillows began in October at an Ohio fulfillment center, where the company tested and learned before implementing the change.
