A police investigation has been launched following the discovery of seven deceased giant tortoises in Ashclyst Forest, situated northeast of Exeter in Devon. The bodies of two tortoises were initially found on January 8, with an additional five discovered in close proximity on January 12.
Devon and Cornwall Police are actively working to identify the owners of the tortoises and are urging individuals with relevant information to come forward. The circumstances surrounding the disposal of the animals remain under scrutiny as investigators seek to piece together the events leading to their deaths.
A police spokesperson commented on the ongoing investigation, stating, "Enquiries are under way to identify the owners and establish the circumstances that led to the animals being disposed of. At this time, they are understood to be Aldabra giant tortoises. Police are investigating the circumstances given the unusual type of incident and the protected status of the animals."
The Aldabra giant tortoise, known for its impressive size and longevity, is classified as a protected species. The discovery of these deceased creatures has raised concerns not only due to the unusual nature of the incident but also because of the protected status of the tortoises, warranting a thorough investigation into the potential criminal aspects surrounding their deaths.
In an appeal to the public, officers are seeking assistance in identifying additional leads that may shed light on the origin of the animals, contributing crucial information to the ongoing investigation.
