EU Intensifies Investigation of Elon Musk's X  Contents Moderation

بواسطة Samuel O . Adeniyi 8 مايو 2024 0

The European Union has taken further steps in its investigation of Elon Musk's social network X, raising fresh concerns about its content moderation practices.

The probe, launched in December under the Digital Services Act (DSA), could potentially lead to fines of up to 6% of X's global annual turnover, per an EU report.

The Commission, On Wednesday,  announced it had sent X a formal request for information (RFI).

The RFI targets a range of issues, including illegal content risks, manipulative design, shortcomings in ad transparency, and platform data access for researchers.

Also, the EU is concerned about X's shrinking content moderation team and its reduced linguistic coverage in the EU.

"The request for information sent today is a further step in an ongoing investigation," the EU said in a press release.

"It builds upon the evidence gathering and analysis conducted so far, including X's Transparency report published in March 2024 and X's replies to previous requests for information, which addressed, among others, mitigation measures for risks linked to generative AI," EU added in the statement.

The EU also seeks information about X's assessment and mitigation of risks related to generative AI tools, particularly their potential impact on elections, illegal content spread, and fundamental rights.

As a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP), X is subject to additional DSA regulations. These rules require the company to assess and address systemic risks, including disinformation.
