Governor Inuwa Yahaya has officially enacted the Gombe State Electricity Bill, 2025.
This announcement was made on Tuesday by Ismaila Uba-Misilli, the director-general of press affairs at the Government House.
The bill was approved by the Gombe House of Assembly on April 29 and received the governor's signature on May 5.
The government indicated that this move aligns with the Electricity Act 2023, which was signed by President Bola Tinubu, directing state governments to create their own legal structures for electricity management within their areas.
According to the statement, the Gombe State Electricity Law 2025 establishes a legal framework for the state’s constitutional authority over electricity issues within its borders. It also supports the formation of the Gombe State Electricity Market and the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
These bodies will oversee the regulation of electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and system operations within the state.
“The new legislation empowers the state government to manage and regulate electricity activities across the entire value chain, from generation to consumption, while fostering significant private sector investments and public-private partnerships.
It also enhances access to electricity through various models, such as grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Gombe state is well-positioned to leverage this legal framework,” the statement explained.
Furthermore, it noted, “As one of Nigeria’s power-generating states, Gombe is home to the Dadinkowa Hydro-Electric Power Station, which contributes around 40 megawatts to the national grid.
Apart from hydro power, the state also has considerable untapped coal, petroleum, and natural gas resources that could stimulate industrial growth and offer reliable energy to its residents and businesses.”
