ADO-EKITI (NAN) - A 31-year-old woman, Ajayi Esther, appeared in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, accused of refusing to marry a suitor after taking N607,500 from him.
The defendant, whose address is unknown, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, impersonation, and breach of peace.
The prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, informed the court that the alleged offences took place on February 1 at approximately 10:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
Inspector Adeniyi stated that the defendant, who is married, deceived the complainant, Ajayi Oluwabusuyi, by claiming to be single.
He explained that under the pretense of agreeing to marry him, she collected N607,500 in preparation for their engagement ceremony, which she did not proceed with.
Additionally, it was alleged that the defendant falsely claimed to be a teacher at Egiri Oke Comprehensive School in Iyin-Ekiti, located in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government area of Ekiti State. The prosecutor mentioned that the defendant acted in a manner that might disrupt public peace.
According to him, the charges violate Sections 186, 393, and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021. The prosecutor requested an adjournment to review the case file and gather witnesses. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.
The defendant's counsel, Joy Raphael, requested that bail be granted, assuring the court that she would not abscond. Chief Magistrate Dolamu Babalogbon granted bail at N50,000 with one surety of the same amount. The case was adjourned until March 5 for further hearing.
