Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the demolition of about 6,000 illegal structures in 30 areas of Abuja.
The demolition is part of efforts to restore the master plan of the FCT and rid the territory of shanties and other illegal structures.
The affected areas include Apo Mechanic Village, Byazhin, Dawaki, Dei Dei, Durumi, Dutse, Garki, Garki Village, Gishiri, Gwagwalada, Idu, Jabi, Kado Village, Karmo, Karshi, Karu, Katampe, Ketti Village, Kpaduma, Kabusa, Kpana Village, Kubwa, Lokogoma, Lugbe, Mabushi, Mpape, Nyanya, Piya Kasa, Jikwoyi, and Galadima.
The demolition is scheduled to begin in February 2023.
In a statement, Wike said that the demolition was necessary to restore the master plan of the FCT and to ensure that the territory was developed in a planned and orderly manner.
He said that the demolition would also help to improve security in the FCT and create a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
Wike appealed to the owners of the affected structures to cooperate with the authorities and to remove their belongings from the affected areas before the demolition began.
He said that the demolition would be carried out in a humane manner and that the authorities would provide compensation to those who are affected.
