Nigerian musician Gaiya Moses, better known as Deemoe, has carved out a distinct niche in the music industry with his rap storytelling abilities.
Reflecting on his experience, Deemoe stated, "I've always loved and enjoyed listening to music but never considered composing it myself.
“It wasn’t until I was sent to boarding school that I discovered my ability to write rhymes. Being homesick led me to find solace in writing down my emotions, which later evolved into structured rhymes and verses.”
He attributed his early exploration of poetry and rhyming to a class activity that sparked his interest in storytelling.
As his musical career evolved, Deempe was inspired by his rap idols' storytelling styles.
He said, "When I first started rapping, I was greatly affected by Eminem and Meek Mill. Eminem's fast verses and Meek Mill's storytelling mode influenced my writing style."
Dee Moe gradually learnt that he was drawn to storytelling, preferring slow tracks that allowed for more in-depth narrative investigation.
"I eventually understood that storytelling was where my passion truly lay," he said.
Incorporating Afrobeats into his music was also an important aspect of his artistic development.
Dee Moe stated, "Seeing Afrobeats take over both Nigeria and the international scene inspired me to incorporate it into my rap style. I believe it was executed flawlessly.”
His fusion of genres reflects his innovative approach and willingness to explore new musical landscapes.
Pursuing a master’s degree in music has been a milestone for Dee Moe, akin to winning a Grammy in his eyes.
“Deciding to pursue a master’s degree in music felt like I was giving myself a Grammy,” he enthused.
Despite its challenges, he said his academic journey had provided him with invaluable exposure and insights into the music industry.
“This experience has completely changed my approach to music and made me consider further academic pursuits, like a PhD.”
