LAGOS, Nigeria - The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has penalized and derecognized approximately 574 schools implicated in examination misconduct.
The head of WAEC's national office, Dr. Amos Dangut, made this announcement to reporters at the national headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.
He noted that the examination body has forwarded the list of the schools involved to the Federal Government via the Ministry of Education for further action.
The schools found guilty of such malpractices will no longer be recognized as WAEC examination centers.
He stated, “This year, we have shared with them a total of 574 schools whose recognition has been withdrawn. This step will also be taken by all examining bodies.”
Additionally, he mentioned, “These schools are no longer acknowledged as examination centers by WAEC, and we will refrain from conducting exams there.”
In preparation for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scheduled to take place from Thursday, April 24 to Friday, June 20, 2025, Dangut revealed that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered for the examination, reflecting an increase of 158,627 candidates compared to last year.
He specified that there are 979,228 male candidates and 994,025 female candidates.
Dangut emphasized WAEC’s dedication to utilizing technology by introducing the inaugural Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates.
He remarked that no two candidates will have identical questions to deter cheating.
