Vodafone Group Plc has entered into a 10-year partnership with Alphabet Inc.’s Google to provide advanced cloud services, generative artificial intelligence tools, and enhanced cybersecurity features to customers across Africa and Europe.
The deal marks a significant step towards integrating AI technologies into Vodafone’s offerings, aimed at improving digital experiences and boosting operational efficiency.
Vodafone Group chief executive, Margherita Della Valle, said: “Together, Vodafone and Google will put new AI-powered content and devices into the hands of millions of more consumers.
"Using these services, our customers can discover new ways to learn, create and communicate, as well as consume TV, on a scale we haven’t seen before.”
A central feature of the collaboration is Vodafone’s promotion of Google’s AI-powered Pixel devices, supported by Vodafone’s 5G network in Europe.
This will help expand customer access to AI-driven devices, as Vodafone continues to support the Android ecosystem alongside Google’s products.
Starting in 2025, Vodafone will roll out Google One AI Premium subscription plans in select countries, featuring Gemini Advanced, Google’s generative AI platform.
These tools, which include visual, text, and audio AI capabilities, align with a broader trend as tech giants like Google, Apple, and Samsung compete to integrate advanced AI features into their devices.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, highlighted the transformative power of AI in mobile technology.
Kurian said: “As AI becomes more prominent on devices, the nature of mobile experiences will change, making them smarter and more intuitive.”
Vodafone’s partnership with Google is designed to make these AI advancements accessible to consumers, facilitating a smoother transition towards AI-powered mobile interactions.
In addition to consumer products, Vodafone plans to use Google Cloud’s enterprise AI platform to enhance its business services, including cloud-based cyber security solutions designed to protect companies from new and emerging cyber threats.
Vodafone will also leverage Google’s technology to improve its Vodafone TV service, offering enhanced search, personalised recommendations, and targeted advertising, underscoring the role of AI in shaping home entertainment.
This expanded partnership is part of Vodafone’s broader strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional connectivity by offering innovative digital services.
By adopting AI-powered features, Vodafone is positioning itself to tap into new revenue opportunities, following the lead of tech companies like Google that have successfully expanded their digital ecosystems.
