OGUN, Nigeria (NAN) - The police command in Ogun announced on Monday that they are aware of a video circulating on social media showing an elderly man, Areola Abraham, being assaulted.
A representative for the command, CSP Omolola Odutola, stated that Abraham was shown prostrating while enduring verbal abuse and physical assault by a traditional leader. This traditional leader has been identified as Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo.
In light of the seriousness of the incident, police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo has mandated a thorough and discreet inquiry. “The CP assures that the police will uphold the rule of law and fundamental human rights principles in this case,” Odutola noted.
Additionally, the Ogun state government has suspended Mr. Ogunjobi for six months due to “uncivil conduct.” Odutola mentioned that both parties have reported to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Eleweran in Abeokuta, where their statements were taken.
She also emphasized that the command categorically disapproves of any form of assault, harassment, and violence, regardless of the individuals involved. “The command will strive to ensure that justice is served and the public will be informed of relevant updates in due course,” the police spokeswoman stated.
