Akwa Ibom State governor, Umo Eno has intervened in the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to go on a strike in the strike.
The governor's intervention in addressing some of the union's challenges, resulted in the suspension of its planned industrial action in Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh it was revealed that the union made the resolution following the governor's intervention to tackle their grievances.
Governor Eno convened a meeting at the Government House in Uyo, where he engaged a diverse group of Labour leaders representing the Akwa Ibom State University. During the meeting, he made commitments to alleviate their concerns, including the clearance of the 13th-month salary bonus, provision of a three-month palliative, and the commencement of construction on strategic roads within the main campus at Ikot Akpaden, among other pledges.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of the University as a cornerstone of the state's pride. He urged the university's management to utilize internally generated revenue for various projects, assuring consistent monthly subventions from the government.
The ASUU leaders, led by Comrade (Elder) Sunny James of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, and Dr. Inyang Udosen, Chairperson of ASUU, AKSU chapter, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his "labour-friendly" stance. They assured that the planned strike would be called off in light of the Governor's commitments.
"We thank the governor for being a labour-friendly governor and for promising to address some of the contending issues. We will no longer continue with our planned strike since the governor is willing to address a number of the contentious issues," the statement noted.
