Uk, Us, China Sign Ai Safety Pledge Recognizing Need For Action

POSTED ON November 1, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole
In a groundbreaking gathering at Bletchley Park, political and technology leaders from around the world, including the UK, United States, and China, came together on Wednesday for the inaugural summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety, where they unanimously recognized the "need for international action." The United Kingdom's government initiated the two-day event, located north of London, by unveiling the "Bletchley Declaration," which bears the signatures of 28 nations and the European Union. This historic agreement highlights "the urgent need to understand and collectively manage potential risks through a new joint global effort to ensure AI is developed and deployed in a safe, responsible way for the benefit of the global community." Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, hailed the declaration as a "landmark achievement," and in a video message to the summit, King Charles III emphasized the imperative for international collaboration to address the "significant risks" stemming from unchecked AI development, stating, "There is a clear imperative to ensure that this rapidly evolving technology remains safe and secure." UK Technology Minister Michelle Donelan described the declaration as the world's first comprehensive acknowledgment of the AI challenge, asserting that "the world [is] coming together to identify this problem." The announcement came as both the UK and the United States announced their plans to establish dedicated institutes for assessing and mitigating the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI technology. While the unveiling of cutting-edge AI models has showcased the potential of "frontier AI," it has also raised concerns regarding issues such as job displacement, cyber threats, and the extent of human control over these systems. The Bletchley Park conference zeroes in on "frontier AI," with Donelan calling it a "historic moment in mankind's history." She also revealed plans for two more summits in South Korea in six months and in France next year. However, there were reports that London had to scale back its ambitions, such as launching a new regulatory body, due to perceived lack of enthusiasm. Among the notable figures attending the conference was Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and tech magnate Elon Musk, who was present on the first day and scheduled to engage in discussions with Rishi Sunak on Thursday. Donelan acknowledged that the summit's objective wasn't to craft global legislation but to pave the way for better comprehension and management of the risks associated with "frontier AI."
