Uk Unveils Five-Point Plan To Restrict Immigration

POSTED ON December 5, 2023 •   Foreign Affairs      BY Oluwakemi Ademuyiwa
The UK government has issued a comprehensive five-point plan aimed at curbing immigration, sparking varied responses. The measures include prohibiting care workers from relocating with their families and a substantial increase in the minimum salary requirement for skilled worker visas. Home Secretary James Cleverly, in office for just three weeks, faces mounting pressure to establish a robust stance on immigration. He emphasized the need for fair, legal, and sustainable immigration policies, stating, "Enough is enough." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RS0ODw5xyQ UK Home Secretary Cleverly reads new UK immigration plan Credit: Independent TV | Source: YouTube He gave the following outline for the immigration plan; Health and Care Visas: Proposes ending the "abuse" of health and care visas, preventing overseas care workers from bringing dependents. Skilled Worker Visa Minimum Salary Change: Increases the minimum salary requirement for skilled worker visas from £26,000 to £38,700, representing a 50% rise. Shortage Occupation List: Alters the Shortage Occupation list policy by eliminating the 20% minimum wage reduction for jobs deemed hard to fill in the UK labor market. Family Visas: The minimum requirement for a family visa will increase from £18,600 to £38,700, emphasizing the need for individuals to support their dependents financially. Student Visas: Home Secretary James Cleverly informed MPs that these changes, coupled with a reduction in student dependents, will result in approximately 300,000 fewer people entering the UK in the coming years compared to the previous year. The government has also initiated a review of the graduate route through the Migration Advisory Committee, signaling potential forthcoming changes to student visa policies.
