Uk Donates £1M To Flood-Stricken Libya

In response to the devastating floods that have ravaged Libya, the United Kingdom announced on Wednesday that it would provide an "initial package" of aid worth up to £1 million ($1.25 million) to offer much-needed support to those affected. The UK government revealed that it is collaborating with trusted partners on the ground to identify the most pressing basic needs in the flood-stricken areas, with a focus on shelter, healthcare, and sanitation. Additionally, the UK has expressed its readiness to offer further assistance as required. The flash floods that struck the eastern city of Derna on Sunday have had a profound impact on the region, with Libyan authorities reporting over 3,800 deaths. However, it is feared that the actual death toll may be significantly higher. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his shock at the scale of loss and devastation caused by the floods. He stated, "We're working to provide immediate assistance to the Libyan people, including initial funding to support the international relief effort." The United Nations has also taken action in response to the flooding crisis by allocating $10 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The UK government emphasized its significant contribution to the CERF, with a commitment of £52 million in 2023, making it one of the largest donors to the fund.
