AKURE, Nigeria - A tragic road accident on the Ore/Lagos Expressway in Ondo State claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals.
The incident, confirmed by Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), took place at Onipetesi in the Odigbo Local Government Area. It occurred on Saturday when two commercial buses collided and caught fire around 12:10 p.m.
Ibitoye reported that 28 occupants of the buses died at the scene, with another two succumbing to their injuries en route to the hospital. Fortunately, two additional individuals survived the crash and are currently receiving medical attention.
The FRSC commander mentioned that preliminary investigations indicated that one of the drivers involved was driving against traffic.
Providing an update on Sunday, Ibitoye stated that the two injured persons are responding well to treatment at Olaoluwa Medical Clinic in Onipetesi. The remains of the 30 individuals who perished in the fire have been taken to the General Hospital in Ore, located in the Odigbo Local Government Area.
The two buses involved were operated by private transport firms, namely GUO Transport Company and Flight Transport Company. Ibitoye revealed that the GUO Transport Company's bus was traveling from Lagos and was moving against the flow of traffic, while the Flight Transport Company bus was en route from Gboko in Benue State to Lagos.
According to the FRSC report, investigations pointed out that both buses were speeding and violating road traffic regulations, with the GUO Transport Company bus's reckless driving leading to the catastrophic accident.
The Sector Commander emphasized the need for motorists to adhere to traffic laws and urged passengers to remind drivers if they are exceeding speed limits or ignoring traffic regulations.
