An atmosphere of unease enveloped one of the prominent first-generation banks in Ikorodu, Lagos State, as the lifeless body of a staff member was discovered in the bank's restroom, prompting suspicions of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Amarachi Ugochukwu, reportedly took her own life, leaving behind a suicide note and an empty can of insecticide in the restroom. Amarachi, a Marketing staff member, was found on the restroom floor after colleagues noticed her prolonged absence when her phone rang unanswered.
Concerned colleagues initiated a search within the bank premises, and upon discovering the locked restroom, forced the door open to find Amarachi motionless on the floor. The tragic incident occurred on January 8, 2024.
A suicide note, discovered in a 2024 diary, revealed Amarachi's deep emotional struggles. In the note, she expressed despair over her life, citing economic hardships, wrong decisions, and a bleak future as factors contributing to her mental distress. The note included apologies to her parents, mentioning five other individuals by name, and ended with a plea to the Lord for mercy.
Upon confirmation of her demise by a doctor called to the scene, the police were alerted. Officers from the Ikorodu division arrived and evacuated Amarachi's body to the Ikorodu General Hospital for autopsy.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, acknowledging that it had indeed occurred.
