The crisis within the Sokoto State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a turn for the worse, as several key leaders have abandoned ship to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Notable leaders of the PDP in Illela Local Government Area and Eastern Sokoto have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the State.
The defectors include Alhaji Bala Maigari, National Delegate and PDP leader in Illela, Alh Mustapha Isah Garu Illela, PDP Zonal Chairman for Sokoto East, Kabiru Nuhu, PDP Secretary in Illela, and Nasiru Magaji Gidan-Hamma, former Illela Local Government Deputy Chairman.
They cited the numerous development projects executed by the current administration in Illela local government as their reason for joining the APC.
They expressed enthusiasm for being part of the positive change happening in the state and pledged their unwavering support for Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto’s leadership.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto welcomed the defectors into the APC, assuring them of equal treatment.
Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko congratulated them on their decision and promised more development projects for the area and the state.
The chairman of APC in Illela local government, Alh. Muhammadu Musa Sarkin Alaru, who also serves as ALGON Chairman, noted that this development will further strengthen the APC’s presence in the area.
This mass defection is the latest in a series of crises plaguing the PDP, which has been struggling to maintain unity since its loss in the 2023 presidential election.
Analysts predict more defections as the 2027 general election approaches, citing the party’s inability to address internal issues and enforce discipline among its members.
