President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has enacted three bills sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, which create the Federal College of Education in Bende, Abia State; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Bende, Abia State; and the Federal University of Okigwe in Imo State.
These institutions aim to deliver quality educational and research opportunities that address the educational requirements of the Southeast region.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu, made this announcement in Abuja on Monday.
He mentioned that the Federal College of Education in Bende will provide full-time courses in areas such as technology, applied sciences, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management, alongside teaching and training programs.
Additionally, the colleges will conduct research on developing and adapting techniques, and there will be provisions for appointing a provost and officials to oversee the administration and discipline of students.
Likewise, the University of Medical and Health Sciences located in Item, Bende, Abia State, will offer high-quality medical education and training through both undergraduate and graduate programs in various health-related disciplines.
The university will also engage in research concerning medical sciences, health policy, and healthcare delivery to enhance knowledge and improve health outcomes. "Ultimately, the University aims to bolster human health and wellness through education, research, and service delivery," Nwabughiogu stated.
The proposed Federal University of Okigwe in Imo State is also set to provide quality education, research opportunities, and meet the educational needs of the local population, according to Nwabughiogu.
In response, Kalu expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for signing the bills, acknowledging the Senate, his colleagues in the House of Representatives, and Nigerians for their overwhelming support.
He remarked that the establishment of these institutions signifies a major milestone in fostering education and growth in the region, encouraging the Southeast populace to continue backing the Tinubu administration with the promise of further dividends of democracy.
