President Bola Tinubu convened urgent meetings on Thursday with the All Progressives Congress state governors, prominent traditional rulers, and Ulamas (Islamic religious scholars) at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
This was part of the government's efforts to prevent the planned nationwide hunger protests scheduled for August 1 to 10.
The meetings were prompted by increasing calls for anti-hunger protests due to widespread economic hardships in the country.
The protests, organised under the hashtag ‘EndBadGovernance,’ have gained momentum on social media, although the organisers remain unidentified.
President Tinubu initially met with the APC governors at the Presidential Villa, followed by a meeting with prominent traditional rulers.
The latter meeting was attended by notable figures including the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife.
These discussions followed a previous meeting by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the cancellation of the National Economic Council meeting.
Notable attendees at the meetings included the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Finance and the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.
