ABUJA,Nigeria - President Bola Tinubu stated on Monday that human capital flight can be countered by enhancing the economy, applying grassroots policies that meet community needs, and fostering a strong sense of ownership among the citizens.
During the inauguration of the Planning Committee for the National Youth Conference at the State House, Tinubu emphasized that the ongoing economic reforms aim to bolster the economy for the benefit of Nigerian youths, who make up over 60 percent of the population.
"I want to assure you that you are the future of this nation; everything depends on you. Every decision I've made centers around you and your potential. When we eliminated the fuel subsidy, it was to safeguard your future. We have cleared the path for a brighter future ahead for you," the President stated.
He remarked on the reasons behind the migration of many professionals from Nigeria, suggesting that if prosperity were cultivated at home and individuals were empowered, they would choose to remain.
He urged the 44-member planning committee to know that the government would act on the results of their discussions and the framework for the national conference.
"This is your chance to contribute towards national development and prosperity. Today's government is focused on you. You may criticize politicians, but remember, politics is ultimately about development and the future of upcoming generations. You are the lifeblood of our nation, and I hope you accept this responsibility earnestly," he stated.
Tinubu expressed gratitude for their dedication, stating the committee's role is to inspire not just for today, but also for the future.
He noted that his economic initiatives have repositioned the economy towards greater empowerment, with indicators showing a decline in prices, especially for food, and a stabilization of the exchange rate.
"When we began, the situation appeared grim and uncertain. We persevered, as if drawing water from a dry well. However, now the economy has improved; prices are decreasing, confidence is rising, and investors are showing interest. Technology is progressing. You have a significant opportunity and I am here to listen. I acknowledge your spokesperson's comments—advancing the nation's development is in your hands."
He added that he is willing to assist in navigating and alleviating the burdens of challenges to pave the way for youth advancement.
"The future is bright for you, and it is in your control. Speak candidly to me about what you believe needs correction and the path forward. We will act on your recommendations as long as they contribute to the country's growth," the President concluded.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, expressed gratitude to the President for empowering the youth and assured that the committee reflects a fair representation of various stakeholders.
"We appreciate your visionary ideas; over 260,000 students have already benefitted from the administration's student loan programs," he noted.
The minister also acknowledged the renovation of the Third Mainland Bridge for public use and the resolution of the passport backlog.
He commended the President for significant infrastructural advancements that will endure through generations.
A committee member, Samson Itodo, stated that the conference would signify a crucial step in fostering youth participation in the nation's development.
He highlighted key areas of focus, such as political governance, economic transformation, future skills like Artificial Intelligence, climate change, energy transition, and social cohesion and security.
He mentioned that the framework would involve virtual consultations, calls for memoranda, regional town hall meetings, and the Abuja congress.
