President Bola Tinubu has canceled the previously planned nationwide broadcast for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations, explained that this decision is due to President Tinubu's commitment to attend a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday.
Instead, the president will deliver his Democracy Day address directly from the chambers of the National Assembly.
“Because of President Bola Tinubu's attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the scheduled Presidential National Broadcast for June 12 has been canceled.
President Tinubu will present his address from the National Assembly,” stated Imohiosen. He mentioned that other planned activities for the day will continue as scheduled.
Previously, a notice sent to journalists indicated the cancellation of the customary military parade originally set to honor the 26th Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
No official reason was provided for the military parade's cancellation. The notice also mentioned that the president would engage in a special joint session of the National Assembly at 12 noon.
The notice Signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye on behalf of the Director of Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the notice provided an updated schedule of events, stating, “The Inter-Ministerial Committee would like to announce the following updates for the 26th Democracy Day celebration:
1. Presidential National Broadcast on June 12, 2025, at 7 a.m.
2. No Democracy Day Parade.
3. H.E. President Bola Tinubu will attend the National Assembly Joint Session at 12 noon.
4. Public Lecture on Democracy Day Celebration at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. Time: 4 pm. Theme: Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The committee also specified that the public lecture at the State House Conference Centre will be exclusively covered by accredited State House correspondents.
