President Bola Tinubu okayed plans for the national census scheduled for 2023 but a new date will be chosen.
The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, shared this information with State House Correspondents following a comprehensive briefing at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
During the briefing, Kwarra highlighted that the purpose of their visit was to present their report to the President who will now carefully examine the report and make an informed decision regarding the nationwide census.
Kwarra also mentioned that the Commission may require additional funding, as delaying the census further could lead to financial constraints. He expressed gratitude for the President's support, which has encouraged the Commission to intensify its preparations.
"We provided him with a comprehensive update on our preparedness and anticipated outcomes. I am pleased to announce that Mr President has generously approved his support for the Commission in conducting the census and our preparatory activities.
Although we are not facing any major obstacles, his endorsement has given us the confidence and motivation to enhance our preparations," Kwarra stated.
He further added, "We will continue with our preparations and await his decision on the date for the census. We have submitted our proposal, which he will study before responding to us. We are grateful for his assurance of support and appreciate his recognition of the importance of data for national planning and development."
