A terrorist group, Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly launched a deadly attack on a police station in Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
The tragic incident took place on February 3, 2024 and resulted in the alleged killing of four police officers and the theft of a significant cache of ammunition.
Report gathered that the armed ISWAP fighters outnumbered the police officers on duty, stormed the police station located in Gajiram town, and opened fire on the unsuspecting law enforcement personnel. During the attack, parts of the police station were set ablaze, contributing to the chaos that unfolded late on Friday.
A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that some police officers managed to survive the onslaught, four officers paid the supreme price in the line of duty. The aftermath of the attack left confusion in the town, with some police officers yet to return.
The Borno State Police Command spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth, confirmed the incident, stating, "We received reports that insurgents attacked the Gajiram Police Station around 1 am today, Saturday, February 3. Four police officers indeed paid the supreme price in an exchange of fire with the terrorists when security agents quickly mobilized to repel the attack."
A local vigilante group had reported the incident to the military for reinforcement. However, by the time the military arrived, the attackers had already fled the scene, leaving behind the devastating aftermath.
Borno State has been a frequent target for insurgents and terrorists, despite ongoing efforts by the military and joint security operatives to contain the activities of various terror groups in the region. The attack underscores the persistent challenges faced by security forces in the area and the urgent need for sustained efforts to safeguard the lives and properties of citizens.
