U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has called on President Donald Trump to grant the esteemed African-American economist and influential figure within the black conservative movement, Thomas Sowell, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Cruz made this appeal to Trump in response to a post by well-known black conservative Larry Elder, advocating for the U.S. president to present the highest civilian honor to the 94-year-old Sowell while he is still living. "The Great Thomas Sowell is 94. There is still time for President Trump to award Professor Sowell the Presidential Medal of Freedom!!!" Cruz communicated in the post.
Sowell was a significant influencer in the conservative movement during the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
He had the opportunity to take on various roles within his administration, including Secretary of Education, but chose to decline.
Additionally, he has written extensively on topics such as politics, economics, education, and race, with his work making a notable impact on other black conservative leaders, such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and economist Walter Williams.
