A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, approved the matter for judgment after the legal teams for both the Federal Government and Nnamdi Kanu presented their final arguments. Nnamdi Kanu's legal team was led by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Kanu Agabi, SAN. However, Prof. Mike Ozehkome, SAN, presented the appeal to the Supreme Court. Kanu's legal team requested not only his immediate release but also "very heavy and punitive costs" against the Federal Government. The Federal Government, represented by Mr T. A. Gazzali, SAN, urged the Supreme Court to uphold its appeal, overturn the Court of Appeal's judgment ordering Kanu's release, and resume his trial on terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Vanguard reports. The Court of Appeal in Abuja had previously ordered Nnamdi Kanu's release and quashed the terrorism charges against him, citing violations of laws when he was forcefully returned to Nigeria from Kenya for trial. Dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal's judgment, the Federal Government appealed the decision to the Supreme Court and obtained a suspension of the execution of the judgment until the appeal is determined. Back in May, Kanu claimed that the DSS denied him access to visitors of his choosing, in clear defiance of a standing court order that granted him such privileges. According to a statement released by his lead counsel, Kanu initiated contempt proceedings against the Director General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, in response to these allegations.
