Still feeling the effects of a lackluster performance by some of his players during the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle has begun the process of revamping his team for improved results when the qualifiers resume in September.
Chelle's efforts to reorganize the Super Eagles will commence this week, with plans to travel to London to discuss matters with Arsenal's rising star, Ethan Nwaneri.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has been gaining attention under Mikel Arteta and is eligible to represent both Nigeria and England.
Although he has played for England at youth levels, Nwaneri has not yet committed to the senior team, keeping the possibility open for him to switch to either the Super Eagles or the Flying Eagles.
A source affiliated with the Super Eagles stated that Coach Chelle is set to meet with Nwaneri in London this week.
“Chelle will connect with Nwaneri in London this week,” the source mentioned. “I am hopeful that he (Nwaneri) will understand that he has better opportunities to play for the Super Eagles than the Three Lions,” the source added.
The source also noted that the recent World Cup qualifier, which saw the Super Eagles draw 1-1 against the visiting Warriors of Zimbabwe, exposed several weaknesses within the team. “The Super Eagles’ central defense urgently needs revitalization,” he pointed out.
“The midfield also requires significant adjustment as soon as possible. Football is meant for the youth. The coach must initiate a methodical approach to replace the older players.
“Moreover, the media must allow the coach to perform his role just as they permitted Clemence Westerhof to reform the Super Eagles in the 1990s.
The practice of Nigerian journalists, especially on social media, selecting players for the coach prior to critical matches should cease. It is not benefiting our cause,” he concluded.
