Srichand Hinduja, the 87-year-old chairman of the multinational Hinduja Group conglomerate and the wealthy patriarch of Britain's richest family, passed away.
Dementia affected Hinduja, also known by his initials SP. On May 17, Wednesday morning, his family reported that he had died quietly.
He served as the chairman of the business group by the same name, which owns listed firms in India with interests in the financial sector, chemicals, software, and heavy equipment.
With an estimated net worth of 28.5 billion pounds ($36 billion), which includes million-dollar properties in central London, Hinduja and his 83-year-old younger brother Gopichand topped the Sunday Times Rich List for a fourth consecutive year in 2022.
Daughters of Hinduja Shanu and Vinoo released a statement saying, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father."
"SP was a visionary giant of commerce and industry, as well as a philanthropist and humanitarian… We will always be grateful for the time we shared with him because of the many people he touched along the way."
According to Hinduja's daughters, "SP will be remembered for his significant labor and philanthropic contributions in promoting India and its culture on a worldwide scale."
Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja started The Hinduja Group in 1914. He traded in carpets and dried fruit from Iran before his sons Srichand and Gopichand moved their base to Britain in the 1970s. The Hinduja Group now employs 200,000 people in more than 30 countries.
