Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has threatened to inform the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that banks in the state are not accepting old Naira notes after closing them.
Thus, the governor advised citizens to conduct business using the old notes and notify banks or businesses in the state that do not.
The CBN chairman, Godwin Emefiele, told Soludo that commercial banks could accept and dispense old notes from depositors, Soludo announced on his Facebook page on Monday.
He said, “Commercial banks have been instructed by the Central Bank to release old currency notes and to also receive the same as deposits from customers. Deposit codes are generated by tellers at commercial banks, and there is no cap on the number of times an individual or business can deposit money.
"The CBN Governor issued the order at a Bankers' Committee meeting on March 12, 2023, on Sunday. On a phone call with me on Sunday night, the governor, Dr. Godwin Emefiele, personally affirmed the information above.
Hence, Anambra residents are urged to freely accept and conduct business using both the new notes and the older ones (N200, N500, and N1,000).
Any bank that won't accept deposits of the old notes should be reported by the locals. The Anambra State Government would promptly close the defaulting branch in addition to reporting the bank to the CBN.
