The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Oba Gani Adams, has warned Simon Ekpa, factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to desist from imposing the Biafra agenda on Yorubaland.
Ekpa had said that he would stage a sit-at-home protest in Lagos State, as is being done in the South East, to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB.
However, Adams warned Ekpa that the South-West is not part of "the Biafra Republic" and that it would be "counter-productive" to try to impose the Biafra agenda on Yorubaland.
"I can't go to the South East now and say I want to decide for the people of that region," Adams said. "So, it is not possible to import the South-East agenda into Yorubaland. It would be counter-productive. We advise him (Ekpa) to drop that idea."
Adams also warned Ekpa that any attempt to impose the Biafra agenda on Yorubaland would be resisted. "He should desist from repeating the mistake of the 1970s," Adams said. "He should be very, very careful."
Adams' warning comes as tensions are rising between the IPOB and the Yoruba nation. The IPOB has been accused of carrying out attacks on Yoruba people in the South-West, and there have been calls for the group to be banned.
It remains to be seen whether Ekpa will heed Adams' warning. However, Adams' warning is a clear sign that the Yoruba nation will not tolerate any attempt to impose the Biafra agenda on Yorubaland.
