The National Council on Nutrition has approved new measures to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria.
The council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, met at the State House in Abuja to discuss and approve the measures.
One of the approved measures is the creation of a national nutrition dashboard, to be hosted by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and also available on the NCN website.
This tool is aimed at improving oversight and coordination of nutrition-related initiatives across the country.
Shettima emphasized the need for active and proactive participation from all stakeholders, including ministries, departments, agencies, development partners, and others.
The Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, announced these measures in a statement titled, ‘National Council On Nutrition Approves New Measures to Address Food, Health Concerns.’
Shettima also highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the nutritional status of every Nigerian.
He referenced the creation of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit, operating within the framework of the Presidential Economic Coordination Committee, as a demonstration of the administration's recognition of the urgency of food crises and efforts to develop more resilient and sustainable food systems in Nigeria.
During the meeting, the Vice President commended the efforts of all stakeholders in the nutrition space and assured the development partners and other actors of the government’s readiness to collaborate with them.
He expressed gratitude for their support and efforts, emphasizing the substantial changes being made in the lives of the Nigerian people through collective action.
