RIVERS, Nigeria - The Senate has formed an 18-member committee to supervise the enforcement of emergency rule in Rivers, following the halting of democratic governance in the state.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced this during the first sitting after the Easter break on Tuesday.
Akpabio emphasized the necessity for a committee similar to that in the House of Representatives to oversee the activities of the Sole Administrator and the Rivers State Government during the emergency rule.
He appointed Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, as the committee's chairperson, along with Sen. Rufai Hanga as the Deputy Minority Whip.
The committee includes Sen. Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi), Sen. Osita Izunaso (APC-Imo), Sen. Osita Ngwu (PDP-Enugu), Sen. Kaka Shehu (APC-Borno), Sen. Aminu Abbas (PDP-Adamawa), and Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru (APC-Lagos). Additional members are Sen. Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC-Ondo), Sen. Sani Musa (APC-Niger), Sen. Simon Lalong (APC-Plateau), Sen. Asuquo Ekpeyong (APC-Cross River), and Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo).
The committee also comprises Sen. Ireti Kingibe (LP-FCT), Sen. Onyekachi Nwaenboyi (APC-Ebonyi), Sen. Idiat Adebule (APC-Lagos), Sen. Ede Dafinone (APC-Delta), and Sen. Mohamed Maidori (APC-Jigawa), with Mr. Charles Bala appointed as the Clerk/Secretary.
“If a review is required, it will follow further discussions with our colleagues. However, they need to commence their work right away,” Akpabio stated.
