The Senate begins interrogating the Service Chiefs today (Wednesday) and Thursday regarding the ongoing insecurity plaguing the nation, as revealed by Senator Tokunbo Abiru on Tuesday.
The meeting was set up for those days following the postponement of the scheduled interface between the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, originally slated for Tuesday, to Friday this week.
Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in killings and kidnappings for ransom across the country, intensifying concerns among citizens.
Following a resolution made last Tuesday, the Senate summoned the Service Chiefs to provide insights into their efforts to address the alarming state of insecurity in the nation.
Speaking to reporters, Abiru explained that due to the impending appearance of the Service Chiefs, the Senate opted to reschedule the appearance of the CBN governor for Friday.
In adherence to the resolution, committee members convened in Room 211, the designated venue for the interaction with the CBN governor, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm before deciding to postpone it to Friday.
Committee chairman, Abiru, stated, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor for the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it until Friday this week at 9 am. The decision stemmed from the fact that he and other economic managers have been engaging with our counterparts in the House of Representatives since morning, with no clear end time.”
Earlier during the plenary session, the Senate convened a two-hour closed-door meeting, subsequently addressing a motion presented by Senator Ahmad Lawan regarding the passing of former Yobe State Governor, Senator Bukar Ibrahim.
Following a minute of silence in honor of the deceased, the Senate formed a nine-member delegation tasked with paying condolences to the Governor of Yobe State and the family of the late Senator Ibrahim.
