NIGERIA ----The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, on Tuesday announced the immediate crackdown on fake diplomatic and unauthorised plate numbers on vehicles across roads, nationwide.
This was made known in a statement by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The directive, issued by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, is part of efforts to strengthen national security and curb criminal activities facilitated by fraudulent vehicle identification.
According to the Corps, the fake number plates, include inscriptions such as Diplomatic Number Plates, NYCN, Peace Ambassador, NAUS, CYMS, UN-Unity 01, UN-AMB, and NANS, among others.
FRSC stressed that such plates numbers were not produced by the corps nor issues by the state motor licensing authorities, adding that, they were utilized by criminals for illegal activities.
In a bid to curb the fake and unauthorised use of plate numbers, the Corps has ordered a nationwide tactical enforcement operation across all FRSC formations.
Vehicles found using these unauthorised plates will be impounded, and their owners prosecuted.
The Corps added that it will collaborate with relevant security agencies to track and halt the sources of these fake plates, noting that, producers and users would be held accountable.
The FRSC appealed to Nigerians to report individuals using such numbers that violent the laws of the agencies.
The Corps reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security architecture and warned that no offenders would be spared.
