ABUJA, Nigeria - The Social Democratic Party's Federal Capital Territory chapter has called for the immediate cancellation of the ongoing elections due to increasing reports of irregularities from its members.
This demand was voiced during a protest in Abuja on Friday.
The SDP Publicity Secretary, Taye Ojo, accompanied by several ward chairmen, emphasized that they have formally petitioned the National Chairman of the SDP, Shehu Gabam, to urgently address their concerns.
Among the issues highlighted were the lack of transparency in the sale of nomination forms, the absence of a notice for Congress elections, and the disenfranchisement of members, which are some of the significant infractions observed.
He noted that there was no official communication or public announcement concerning the commencement, process, or deadline for the sale of nomination forms.
Ojo expressed that this situation prevented interested party members from being able to purchase and submit their forms, consequently undermining fairness and inclusivity.
He stated, “No formal notice was provided to inform party members about the dates, venues, modalities, or guidelines for the Congress elections.
This clear disregard for due process and the party’s constitutional provisions has effectively excluded many eligible stakeholders from participating.
“The elections being conducted without prior notification and transparency have disenfranchised numerous loyal and eligible party members from exercising their civic and political rights, violating democratic principles and the SDP’s commitment to internal democracy.
“In light of these irregularities, we demand the immediate suspension of the ongoing Congress elections and the annulment of all Congresses conducted so far, including those on 1st May 2025. Such actions are essential to restore the credibility of the process and maintain the integrity of our esteemed party.
“We implore the National Working Committee under your leadership to take prompt and decisive measures in the interest of justice, fairness, and party unity.”
