Saudi Arabia Crown Prince, Iran President Hold Talks Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

POSTED ON October 11, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole
Saudi Arabia de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, engaged in a crucial phone conversation with Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi, addressing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. This conversation, reported by Saudi state media, marks a significant diplomatic move since the unexpected reconciliation between the two nations in March. The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) stated that during the call on Wednesday, the two leaders discussed "the current military situation in Gaza and its environs." Crown Prince Mohammed conveyed Riyadh's efforts to communicate with both international and regional stakeholders to seek de-escalation in the ongoing crisis. Furthermore, he reiterated Saudi Arabia's steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the kingdom's commitment to backing the Palestinian people. Iran's state news agency, IRNA, also confirmed the conversation, stating that the leaders discussed the imperative need to put an end to war crimes against Palestine. The conflict between Israel and Hamas, initiated by a surprise attack launched by Hamas on Saturday, has resulted in a devastating toll, with both sides reporting significant casualties and civilian deaths. Additionally, the situation has raised concerns about the fate of approximately 150 hostages, predominantly Israelis, who are held in Gaza by Hamas. This development is of paramount significance as it follows the restoration of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which had been strained for seven years before a reconciliation deal brokered by China in March. The reconciliation aimed to strengthen regional stability and cooperation. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia also discussed efforts to halt the ongoing escalation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting Riyadh's commitment to creating conditions for stability and peace while ensuring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people are upheld. These diplomatic efforts hold the potential to contribute to the de-escalation of tensions in the region, although the situation remains highly complex.
