Saudi Arabia Confirms Readiness To Host 2034 World Cup

Saudi Arabia has declared its preparedness to host the 2034 World Cup, whether in the scorching summer heat or during the cooler winter months. Yasser al-Misehal, the president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, made this announcement at the Asian Football Confederation awards in Doha, affirming the nation's versatility in hosting the prestigious event. The success of Saudi Arabia's bid, which was unveiled just 27 days ago, positions the oil-rich nation as the exclusive contender for the tournament, marking a swift decision that contrasts with the lead-up to the neighboring Qatar's hosting of the first winter World Cup, a move that necessitated a pause in European league competitions. The sweltering summer in the desert kingdom can see temperatures soar to a searing 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), raising concerns about the safety of playing football and the comfort of fans attending matches. Misehal addressed these concerns, stating, "Today there are many new technologies that help you with cooling or adding air conditioners in stadiums, in addition to the fact that there are many cities in the kingdom that enjoy a very wonderful atmosphere in the summer." Moreover, Misehal indicated that Saudi Arabia is determined to host the tournament independently, without relying on neighboring countries to share the hosting responsibilities. If this transpires, the world's leading oil exporter would be the first nation to host the newly expanded 48-team World Cup on its own. The United States, Canada, and Mexico are set to host the tournament in 2026, followed by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in 2030. "Saudi Arabia will submit a separate bid," Misehal affirmed, making it clear that there are no plans for other countries to host any matches.
