The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Works in the state to intensify efforts to clamp down on persons removing manholes and carrying out illegal waste disposal in the state.

The governor condemned the removal of manholes and dumping of refuse into drainage systems, capable of causing flooding and environmental hazards.

Sanwo-Olu said this while speaking to Lagos Island residents on Sunday.

He expressed sadness over the destruction of government properties meant to prevent flood and environmental issues.

He warned that those caught would face severe consequences.

In a video shared by TVC, the governor said, “Manholes installed at strategic locations have been removed and we see refuse being dumped on these drainage channels and a whole lot of them have been blocked.

“This is completely unacceptable, and it is a shame on those that are doing it. They do not deserve to be amongst us.

“To destroy not only government properties, (but) manholes that will preserve and protect your environment from flood and environmental issues! What could be the commercial benefit that you’d waste and destroy such investments?

“So the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructures are going to be setting up gangs and if by whatever means you are caught, there are huge consequences.”
