The Lagos State government has approved the last week of September every year for the celebration of the Yoruba culture.
The governor, Sanwo-Olu Babajide has written the state House of Assembly announcing its decision.
A Monday statement by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, noted that the decision of the government followed a resolution passed by the Lagos Assembly at a sitting held on September 19, 2023.
The Yoruba Week celebration is expected to showcase various aspects of the Yoruba culture, including traditional attire, music, dance, cuisine, and other cultural expressions, in a bid to promote and preserve the rich heritage of the Yoruba people.
“Sequel to the resolution of the House at its plenary of Tuesday, September 19, 2023, on the activation of Yoruba cultural heritage and a special day to be assigned as Yoruba day, I have the directive to officially convey Mr. Governor’s approval for the last week of September as Yoruba Week,” a part of the letter, which was read by the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, stated.
Commending Sanwo-Olu and his cabinet for the decision, Obasa described it as a good development.
