Russian Diplomat Seeks Talks With Hamas On Israeli Hostages

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, is planning to hold talks with representatives of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Qatar next week, with the goal of discussing the release of Israeli hostages, as reported by Russia's RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday. Moscow has maintained a cautious stance on the violence arising from the Israel-Hamas conflict, condemning actions from both sides while emphasizing its willingness to serve as a mediator in the ongoing crisis. Bogdanov expressed his readiness to engage with Hamas representatives during his forthcoming trip, stating, "If they are willing, we always are in favor of contact. Especially in this situation, the meeting would be useful for solving practical issues, including the freeing of hostages." The hostage situation unfolded on October 7 when hundreds of Hamas militants breached the fortified border around the Gaza Strip, leading to the loss of over 1,200 lives and the capture of around 150 hostages, including Israelis, foreigners, and individuals with dual nationality. Russia has maintained close ties with both Israeli and Palestinian authorities, positioning itself as a potential intermediary in the ongoing crisis. Bogdanov's diplomatic efforts come shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia's willingness to help find a resolution to the conflict. Putin noted that Russia's positive relationship with Israel over the past 15 years could contribute to mediating the situation and called for an end to what he referred to as an "unacceptable" siege in Gaza. The Russian leader reiterated his belief that the establishment of a Palestinian state is the most viable path toward resolving the ongoing conflict. While Russia continues to play a role in diplomatic efforts, it also remains critical of Western involvement in the Israel-Hamas crisis. Amid these developments, Turkey has demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian aid, with three Turkish planes arriving in El Arish on Saturday to provide essential support to those affected by the conflict.
