Following the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacheaus Adangor, has resigned.
His resignation was revealed in a letter dated November 14, 2023, and written to Governor Sim Fubara.
He stated that his departure from the government was motivated by personal principles and was unrelated to the state's current political situation.
“I hereby give Your Excellency notice of my resignation as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State, with effect from the date of this letter.
“For the avoidance of doubt, from the said office is based on personal principles
“I wish to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity and privilege granted me to serve in your administration as a member of the cabinet. My Family and I are indebted to Your Excellency in gratitude,” the letter read in part.
Adangor was a member of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike's cabinet who was reappointed by Fubara.
During the early stages of the state's crisis, there were rumors that the governor had fired the former Attorney General, who was seen as an ally of the now-Minister of FCT. The state government, however, refuted this.
The Rivers State crisis took on new dimensions early Wednesday when the state administration razed the state legislative chamber.
While the chamber was being demolished, four members loyal to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, led by factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, conducted a plenary at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
On Monday, 27 members of the House elected on the Peoples Democratic Party platform defected to the All Progressives Congress and threatened to reject any request by the governor for approval.
