Respond To Ai Global Threats - Un Secretary-General

POSTED ON November 2, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole •   VIEWS 129

In a groundbreaking world-first summit held in Britain, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a clarion call on Thursday for a "united, sustained, global response" to address the growing threats posed by artificial intelligence.

The summit, known as the AI Safety Summit, brought together a diverse array of political, technological, and global figures to tackle the multifaceted challenges of AI technology. Guterres stressed that the world is "playing catch-up" and urgently needs to "get ahead of the wave" in dealing with the rapid advancements in AI. Addressing the audience at Bletchley Park, north of London, the United Nations chief highlighted the need for proactive measures to ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. The two-day summit concluded on Thursday with a landmark achievement: Western governments, including G7 and EU member states, Australia, Korea, and Singapore, reached a crucial agreement with leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft. This agreement establishes a new safety testing regime for cutting-edge AI models, both before and after their release. The move comes amid growing concerns about the implications of AI technology, ranging from potential job displacement and cyber threats to questions about maintaining human control over advanced AI systems. Guterres warned that AI could have "possible long-term negative consequences" on various aspects of society, from employment to cultural shifts, and cautioned against the concentration of AI power in a few countries and companies, which could "increase geopolitical tensions" and "exacerbate the enormous inequalities that already plague our world." He called for a "united, sustained, global strategy" rooted in multilateralism and the engagement of all stakeholders. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak celebrated the new testing agreement as a "landmark" development that could "tip the balance in favour of humanity." This historic agreement marks a pivotal step forward in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI technology.
