The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stated on Sunday that the actions and statements of certain leaders within the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are hindering the party's progress and complicating reconciliation efforts.
He criticized the eagerness of many party leaders to seek the ousting of the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagu, and the National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, despite existing court rulings against such actions.
Wike commented on the state of opposition parties, particularly the PDP, and lamented the absence of a strong opposition, claiming that figures like the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, are not genuinely fulfilling their opposition roles.
He noted that some opposition leaders prioritize personal ambitions over the collective aim of enhancing democratic processes.
Wike expressed his dissatisfaction with the PDP's leadership, which he perceives as fragmented and inconsistent, a situation he believes is weakening the party's capacity to effectively challenge the current administration.
He remarked on the urgency to advance personal political interests despite court decisions, stating: “I am not bothered at all. The issue is with the courts, and the party's constitution is explicit. If someone is elected, they cannot simply be replaced through appointment. If they resign, they must be succeeded through elections. It does not surprise me that someone is attempting to circumvent this process.
“Some individuals are trying to manipulate the situation, but it will not work. The matter is with the courts, and we must uphold the rule of law. We need to concentrate on resolving internal party issues, especially with the upcoming convention.
“Rather than inciting crises, the convention should proceed as planned in December, allowing us to introduce a new executive.”
Regarding the new president of Ohanaeze, Wike responded to inquiries about his identity and affiliation with the organization.
He firmly asserted that while he respects such organizations, he will not compromise his principles or deny his identity for political advantage.
Wike expressed pride in his heritage and emphasized that he would not sacrifice his beliefs or background for political recognition or popularity.
