Racist Abuse Surfaces Amid Indigenous Rights Referendum Debate In Australia

POSTED ON October 2, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
As Australia prepares for a crucial referendum on October 14, intended to recognize and elevate the rights of Indigenous Australians, the nation finds itself grappling with a troubling undercurrent of racist slurs and abuse that has permeated both online and media discourse. The upcoming vote seeks to decide whether to formally acknowledge First Nations peoples in the Australian constitution. This recognition is a significant step toward addressing deep-rooted disparities, including health inequalities, educational disparities, and disproportionately high rates of incarceration suffered by Indigenous communities, who have inhabited the continent for over 60,000 years before British colonial rule commenced in the late 1700s. The proposed reform, known as the "Voice," would grant Indigenous communities the right to advise parliament, but recent surveys indicate dwindling support over the past year, potentially dooming the referendum's passage. This contentious debate has not only raised questions about the scope and impact of the reform but has also exacerbated racial tensions. Australia's Race Discrimination Commissioner, Chin Tan, expressed disappointment over the personal attacks, labeling of individuals as 'un-Australian,' and perpetuation of racially-based stereotypes that have marred the discourse. Tan emphasized that racism should never be tolerated as a part of public debate and called for respectful dialogue. Recent surveys suggest that the "yes" camp stands at just over 40 percent, while the "no" side has risen to nearly 60 percent, marking a significant shift from the previous year. Opponents of the reform have criticized it for lacking detail and introducing unnecessary bureaucracy, with some, including opposition leader Peter Dutton, warning of a potential "re-racialization" of Australia. Reports of Indigenous-related racism have surged since July, both online and offline, leading to concerns about the divisive impact of the referendum on Australian society. Mental health helplines for First Nations people have recorded a substantial increase in callers reporting abuse, racism, and trauma. In light of these developments, the eSafety Commission has noted a rise in adult cyber abuse complaints from First Nations individuals in the lead-up to the referendum. Officials are urging all Australians to engage in respectful discourse while discussing this critical issue, discouraging slurs, hate speech, and abusive behavior.
