OGUN (Orile Ifo), Nigeria — In a video that has circulated widely on social media, Chief Arinola Abraham Love (JP) was subjected to a shocking act of public humiliation and physical assault, igniting outrage among community members and traditional leaders alike.
The video which was posted on the facebook page of Emmanuel Ojo, the senior special adviser to the of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun reportedly took place in Orile Ifo, shows the elderly chief kneeling defenselessly on the ground while being slapped and verbally berated by Ọba Semiu Olawale Ogunjobi, the Oloorile of Orile Ifo.
The confrontation arose from a bitter kingship supremacy dispute that has reportedly fractured community relations. Observers of the incident suggest that Chief Love's perceived support for a rival coronet Oba named Wasiu was the catalyst for the Oloorile's aggressive actions.
In the video, Ogunjobi’s actions have been described as wholly unbecoming for a traditional ruler, prompting many to reevaluate the responsibilities and conduct expected of leaders.
"This is not just an attack on Chief Love, but an affront to our entire community," said Adeola Ogundipe, a local activist. "What we witnessed is a terrifying reminder that power does not always equate to respect. Traditional leaders must embody dignity and honor, and violence against anyone, especially an elder, cannot be tolerated."
Witnesses to the event expressed shock and anger. Many claimed that such behavior undermines the traditional institutions meant to provide guidance and stability within the community.
"How can we expect our youth to respect authority when we see our leaders acting this way?" questioned Sola Fadeyi, a resident of Orile Ifo. "We need to hold our leaders accountable and ensure they represent our values and integrity."
Community leaders have called for an immediate inquiry into the incident, demanding that proper measures be taken against Ogunjobi.
"The use of violence and humiliation is not how conflicts should be resolved among leaders. We have laws and customs that should guide us," stated Chief Motunrayo Adebayo, a respected elder in the community.
"What happened to Chief Love is unacceptable and must be publicly denounced. Our society is built on respect for elders
